Bastille Day Celebrations in Sydney 2019
On 31 July 2019, the Sydney French Australian Lawyers Society organised Bastille Day celebrations at Creperie Suzette in The Rocks. Guests and members of FALS enjoyed yummy French crepes and galettes for dinner, an amazing performance by talented singer, Christelle Nativel, and a challenging game of trivia. It was a merry night of festivities.

French Australian Lawyers Society Panel Discussion on Modern Slavery
On 7 February 2019, the French Australian Lawyers Society have partnered with Dentons Lawyers Network and Professionals in International Trade to host this event regarding Modern Slavery.
The French Australian Lawyers Society is very grateful to our speakers Alison Elliott, Amy Sinclair and Nicole D'Souza for sharing their knowledge and insight on the new legislation from a federal as well as state perspective.
In the audience we had Jennifer Burn, Interim Anti-Slavery Commissioner (NSW) & Director at AntiSlavery Australia, University of Technology, Sydney to comment on the NSW legislation. NSW State government is seriously committed to addressing Modern Anti-Slavery within the state by appointing a dedicated Commissioner to oversee this issue.

Refugee Law Seminar
On 3 May 2018, the French-Australian Lawyers Society held a refugee law seminar presented by Legal Academic Douglas McDonald Norman. Douglas had brilliantly and accurately presented his article "No One to Bear Witness: Country Information and LGBTQ Asylum Seekers".
The event was a success and we are very grateful to Emily Lau for her help and engagement in general and particularly with this seminar.

On 26 October, members and friends of FACCI, FALS, PwC and the French Business School Alumni Association met up for monthly drinks at Palings. It was a vibrant and enjoyable networking event

Bastille Day Event
On 15 July 2017, the Sydney FALS committee put on a casual social event at the Bonjour Cafe to celebrate Bastille Day. Guests enjoyed traditional French drinks and nibbles before engaging in 4 competitive rounds of trivia questions on French history, literature and food. Guests also enjoyed some classic (and some not so classic) French tunes from a playlist that the committee created for the occasion

It was a casual evening where members of the Sydney legal community, both French and Australian, caught up over drinks and nibbles. Guests had the chance to discuss their experiences travelling, working and studying in France and Australia.

Brexit Seminar
On 30 November 2016, FALS held a seminar on Brexit at the Alliance Française in Sydney.
The seminar was presented by Brian Hillman and Phil Radford who each provided a different perspective on various aspects of Brexit including the vote, the result, the figures, the consequences, will it last and what it all means. Brian provided a perspective against Brexit and Phil provided a perspective for Brexit. Both presentations were well researched, interesting and thought provoking. Over 40 guests were captivated by the topic which was evidenced by the many questions put to both Brian and Phil at the end.
Following the presentation, guests were treated to French wine and delicious canapés served by the Bonjour Café. It was a fantastic evening and FALS thanks Brian and Phil, and all guests for attending.

Annual General Meeting 2016
On 2 February 2016, the fourth Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the French Australian Lawyers Society was held at the French Consulate-General in Sydney. Over 15 members attended the meeting and those who could not physically attend voted by proxy.
We are pleased to announce that at this meeting the 2016 committee was voted in and a small number of changes were made to the constitution pursuant to special resolutions.
After the formalities of the meeting concluded, everyone was able to catch up and celebrate the AGM with a glass of wine. Many members then carried on to have dinner at Le Pub to continue catching up over some more wine and a French meal.
We thank our members for attending the AGM and participating in this important meeting for the Society. We also thank the French Consulate-General in Sydney for welcoming us into their offices.

Bâtonnier and Vice Bâtonnier du Barreau de Paris visit to Sydney
On 4 November 2015, Pierre-Olivier Sur, Bâtonnier and Laurent Martinet, Vice Bâtonnier du Barreau de Paris were welcomed to a cocktail reception jointly held by Baker & McKenzie and the Society at Baker & McKenzie in Sydney. Over 50 guests were welcomed by Mathieu Hanaut, Partner at Baker & McKenzie and Marie Wilkening-Le Brun, President of the Society. In attendance were members of the judiciary, barristers, solicitors and law students.
Both Mr Sur and Mr Martinet gave interesting speeches as to the importance of the contribution of French qualified lawyers working in Australia. Mr Nicolas Croizer, French Consul-General spoke about the importance of lawyers in society.
This event was significant for both French and Australian members of the legal community as Mr Sur and Mr Laurent were in Sydney to attend the Law Society of New South Wales to sign a memorandum of understanding between the Paris Bar and the Law Society for the mutual recognition of work experience for trainee lawyers.

On 15 October 2015, the FALS committee members in Sydney organised a networking event at the Exchange Hotel. It was a relaxed evening with students, paralegals and lawyers in attendance. The guests shared their experiences working and studying in Australia, France and other Francophone countries. The Exchange Hotel offered a warm atmosphere with good quality meals and wines.
Seminar Business Law in Africa
On 28 August 2015 the French Australian Lawyers Society, in association with the Australia Africa Business Council, held a seminar on Business Law in Africa. Over 35 people attended, including lawyers, barristers, journalists (SBS channel) and members of the French Embassy. The speakers were Benoît Le Bars, Managing Partner of Lazareff Le Bars LLP (Paris) and renowned international arbitrator, and François de Senneville, Partner and Head of the Lazareff Le Bars' African desk. The seminar was followed by drinks. All attendees enjoyed learning more about new challenges in this region and the relationships between Australia and Africa.
The main topics discussed were:
- OHADA Law: Benoît Le Bars gave the attendees an overview of OHADA, a system of business laws adopted by 17 African Nations. The OHADA laws also include international arbitration rules and a supranational Court has been created to ensure uniformity between countries.
- Taxes in Africa: François de Senneville gave the participants an overview of the situation of companies investing in Africa.
Bleu Blanc Rouge Bastille Day week-end 2015
On 11 and 12 July 2015, the Society participated in the Bleu Blanc Rouge Festival in Sydney, held on the Customs House foreshore. Members were able to take part in a game of pétanque and a French Cooking Master Class.

Committee members of the Society attended including Anne-Laure Bullier, Vice President, Marie Wilkening-Le Brun, President, Sandrine Alexandre-Hughes 2013 President, Emmanuelle Boue-Mansukh, and Bruno Solia together with over 35 guests.
