2018 EVENTS

Annual General Meeting 2018
On Thursday 22 February 2018, the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the French Australian Lawyers Society was held at the Law Institute of Victoria.

We thank our members for attending the AGM and participating in this important meeting for the Society.  We also thank the Law Institute of Victoria for welcoming us into their offices.

Networking Drinks at Sofitel on Collins
On 22 February 2018, FALS held their first networking drinks event of the year at Sofitel on Collins. 

2017 EVENTS

NETWORKING DRINKS - 30 November 2017
On 30 November 2017, our informal drinks was held at the Intercontinental Hotel on Collins Street.
About 60 guests attended this event, with a relaxed and enjoyable environment providing a wonderful opportunity for the attendees to mingle and socialise. Romeo from 'Romeo Wine' also introduced his business, which provides wine education for corporate events and team building.
NETWORKING DRINKS - 26 October 2017
On 26 October 2017, networking drinks were held at the Intercontinental Hotel on Collins Street. Members and friends of FALS had a chance to catch up over wine and nibbles. Also present were representatives of JET Sport, a social app which allows users to organise and participate in local sporting activities together, as a means of socialising and keeping active. 
BASTILLE DINNER - 13 July 2017

The French Australian Lawyers Society celebrated Bastille Day on 13 July 2017 over dinner at the French Brasserie, 2 Malthouse Ln, Melbourne. Guests were spoilt with a celebratory and exquisite menu of food and wine. A quiz about France and its history was conducted and prizes were awarded.
​We thank the Melbourne French Theatre Company for the tickets to the show 'Every Trick In The Book' and Transmission Films for the tickets to 'Paris Can Wait' awarded to the winners.
NETWORKING DRINKS - 4 May 2017

On 4 May, FALS held their first networking drinks of the year at the Slate Restaurant Bar. It was a vibrant and enjoyable evening.

NETWORKING DRINKS - 16 November 2016
​
On 16 November 2016, drinks were held at Slate Bar in the legal precinct.  The event was well attended by lawyers and newly arrived French qualified lawyers.  It was an enjoyable and relaxed evening.   Guests were able to chat in French and English and enjoy a glass of wine in pleasant company.
AUSTRALIAN AND EUROPEAN REFUGEE LAWS SEMINAR - A YEAR IN REVIEW - 4 October 2016

On 4 October 2016, FALS held a seminar on the topic of Australian and European Refugee Laws.  The event was co-organised and sponsored by Deakin University.  Julian Burnside AO QC, barrister and human rights and refugee advocate, and Dr Maria O Sullivan, a Lecturer in the Faculty of Law, Monash University and an Associate in the Castan Center for Human Rights Law, gave two very interesting presentations on the rights of asylum seekers in Australia and Europe, and the current challenges faced by both jurisdictions.

The seminar was followed by drinks and canapes. 

Over 80 people attended including the French Honorary Consul, Ms Myriam Boisbouvier-Wylie.

BASTILLE DAY FESTIVAL - 16 and 17 July 2016

On 16th and 17th July 2016 the French Australian Lawyers Society participated in the Bastille Day Festival at the State Library of Victoria in Melbourne. Francophiles and Australians enjoyed a program of free, accessible and family oriented activities to celebrate the French National day and experience french language, food and culture.

The day was an opportunity to get a taste of all things French in Melbourne, with theatre, movies, children's activities and, of course, a large selection of French food and wine!  There were many excellent seminars given on the day also, a highlight was the seminar on buying property in France given by Mr Michael Bula, Solicitor, Notary and member of the Society.  Another popular seminar was on Immigration Law given by Ms Jasmine Ruffilli of Sullivan and Ruffilli and Mr Pierre Hammond, French Translator who had also participated in our last seminar in June at the Trust Bar.

The Festival was well received and thoroughly appreciated by the public.  We take this opportunity to thank our members for attending the event and representing the Society.  A minute's silence was held to commemorate the victims of the Nice attack on the night of the 14 July.
IMMIGRATION LAW SEMINAR - 23 June 2016

On 23 June 2016 in Melbourne, FALS and FACCI hosted an Immigration Law Seminar presented by Jackson Taylor and James Hammond from Hammond Taylor Migration Lawyers. 

Hammond Taylor offers a full suite of services tailored to meet business’ immigration needs such as compliance and risk management, managing sponsorship obligations, audit, liaison with the Department of Immigration, and Labour Agreements. 

The seminar covered a broad range of migration issues with a particular focus on temporary work (skilled) visas (subclass 457). The event was well attended and participants enjoyed drinks, food  and networking with the diverse audience after the presentation.
NETWORKING DRINKS - 3 March 2016

On 3 March 2016, an informal drinks event was held at the Intercontinental Hotel on Collins Street in Melbourne.

About 40 members of the profession attended.  We were honoured that the former French consul, Ms Patricia Carroll and Mr Milan Kantor, Consul for the Czech Republic attended the event, which was relaxed and enjoyable.

2015 EVENTS
EUROPEAN LAW SEMINAR/DINNER - 17 September 2015

On 17 September 2015 the French Australian Lawyers Society, the Italian Australian Lawyers Association and the Hellenic Australian Lawyers Association held their first joint EU Law seminar over dinner at the RACV in Melbourne. 

Over 83 people attended including the French Honorary Consul, Ms Myriam Boisbouvier-Wylie and his Honour Justice Kyrou.  Dr Matt Harvey of Victoria University and Stephen Stern, Partner at Corrs Chambers Westgarth, gave an interesting seminar in respect of the history and origins of wine regulation in Europe and the differences between European wine regulation and Australian wine law.  

Attendees were spoilt with champagne from Pommery, which sponsored the event.    

The event was further generously sponsored by Gordon & Jackson Barristers’ Clerks, Thomson Reuters, Discovervin, wine importer of French wines, and Noisette, Bakery and Patisserie.  
BASTILLE DAY FRENCH FESTIVAL - 17 and 18 July 2015

On 17 and 18 July 2015 the French Australian Lawyers Society took part in the Bastille Day festival at the State Library of Victoria.  This event included popular French market stalls of wine, cheeses and patisseries and stands of the French Associations such as Melbourne Accueil and French schools.  There was also entertainment, music and performances as well as the Sunday French lunch and a  seminar on buying property in France given by Mr Michael Bula, Solicitor, Notary and member of the Society.  The festival was very well attended by the public.

BASTILLE DAY FRENCH FESTIVAL COCKTAIL LAUNCH PARTY - 16 July 2015

On 16 July 2015 the Melbourne Bastille Day festival was formally launched by His Excellency Mr Christophe Lecourtier, French Ambassador to Australia, over drinks at the Boat Builders Yard in Melbourne.  Members of the French Australian Lawyers Society attended the event and many distinguished guests including the French Honorary Consul, Ms Myriam Boisbouvier-Wylie, attended the event.
EMPLOYMENT SEMINAR - 26 February 2015

On 26 February 2015 the French Australian Lawyers Society held, in association with the French Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Gadens Lawyers, an Employment Law seminar for the business community. Over 50 people attended the evening, including lawyers and representatives of various businesses.  The speakers were Ian Dixon, Employment Lawyer at Gadens and David Langmead, Barrister, Gordon & Jackson Barristers Clerks.  The seminar was followed by drinks. Conversation flowed in French and English for an informative and enjoyable evening.


2014 EVENTS


WINE AND CHEESE TASTING EVENT - 8 August 2014

Over 50 guests attended a wine and cheese tasting evening on 8 August 2014.  The event was sponsored by Anton Venoir Antiques, Queen Victoria Market Fine Food Deli and Wisdom and Wine.  Guests were able to sample French wines and French cheeses whilst admiring the wonderful French antiques on display by Anton Venoir Antiques.  The event was also sponsored by the Melbourne French Theatre Company, which has been running successfully for over 38 years.  ​

BASTILLE DAY EVENT - 18 July 2014

On 18 July 2014 over 40 guests were welcomed at the French Brasserie on Malthouse Lane, Melbourne for a celebratory dinner. Guests were treated to champagne Devaux Cuvee D by one of the evening's sponsors.
LAUNCH EVENING - 8 May 2014

On 8 May 2014 the French Australian Lawyers Society was formally launched over a drinks function held at Wheat restaurant and bar in Melbourne. Over 50 lawyers and other legal professionals attended the evening and were welcomed by the President, Marie Wilkening-Le Brun.  French Honorary Consul, Ms Myriam Boisbouvier-Wylie, talked about the many French associations and societies working in Victoria such as the French Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
